The installation of the ZellComp deck on a bridge in Belle Glade, Florida was completed in August, 2009. On October 12, 2009, the Florida DOT Lab from Tallahassee, FL completed a live load test on this bridge structure.

Two large special FLDOT trucks are used for such load tests. They have special weights (large concrete blocks) and built-in cranes that allow the lab personnel to create different loading combinations on the weighted trucks.

First the standard loads for traffic were created on the trucks, and the trucks were driven over the bridge several times. Then a maximum load was created with one truck – it was loaded to 74,000 pounds on its back two axles, which is 50% over the maximum allowed load for bridges that must meet AASHTO HS-25 loading.

The ZellComp deck showed even less strain value than what had been recorded when it was tested in 2006 in the lab at the same load ratings. Therefore the deck showed a factor of safety exceeding 4.0 for the actual installed bridge structure.

This test was designed, performed, and monitored by the Florida DOT – completely independent of ZellComp. The University of Florida was also involved and is doing continuous strain gage monitoring of this bridge structure.
